How to Take Care of Horses

I really like horses and I wanted to learn about them. I get books at the library and look at them and read them every day. This is some of the stuff I learned.

People used to hunt for horses and eat them until they learned they could teach the horses how to pull so they they did. When the horses could pull things they had them carry their food for them like treats and stuff. When people rode them to war and stuff it was easier to do it because they were fighting someone else on foot.

They had horses plow their crops, they rode them and they had them pull carriages. It was easier for them to go places because horses were faster than walking on foot. Today there are three sizes of horses. The littlest horse is called a pony. The next biggest horse is a light horse. The third size is a draft horse. Draft means he can carry more things than a light horse can.

A jumping horse is called a holstering. The fastest a horse can go is a gallup. They can also walk, trot and canter. You don't just start a horse with a gallop you have to start off slow and then go to gallop.

Horses have molar and incisors. The molars grind the food and the incisors cut the food into smaller pieces. Sometimes horses teeth develop sharp points on them so the vet might have to file them down once a year so the horses can grind their food correctly. You should never feed a horse a whole apple because they can choke on it. You can feed them any kind of vegetable you want like broccoli, carrots and celery. Their favorite food is oats. If you take them a treat every time you go out to see them they will start nibbling you for a treat so don't give them a treat every time.

A horse gets all it's air from breathing through it's nostrils. It doesn't breath through it's mouth like other animals do. It has really large nostrils so it can take in big amounts of air into its big lungs. This helps them to run better than people.

A father horse is called a sire. A mother horse is called a dam. A female foal is called a philly. A male foal is called a colt.

You don't measure horses by feet, you measure them by hands. You count them from their withers down to the ground. Their withers is a bump where their neck starts.

When you look at a horses hoof, the dark brown part is called a frog. The outside is called the wall. That's where you put the horseshoe. The sole is the very middle.

Did you know that horses are the only animal with one toe? Horses used to have four toes and they didn't even look like horses look now. I'm thinking every year they lost one toe. The reason why I'm saying "I'm thinking" is because it doesn't say how often they lost a toe. After they lost their toes they only kept one toe and that is a big hoof. A hoof is actually one toe!

Haiku

Cats are starved to death
To make them hunt for themselves
I think it is sad

A Haiku is a Japanese poem. The only rules in it is that you have to have five, seven, five, claps. They're called syllables. The first line has to say five. The second line has to say seven and the third line has to say five. I wrote this one for a little party where we learned how Japanese people ate and how they made bouncey balls with feathers in them. They made kites and lots of things came from Japan. We made these things too. We ate rice with chop sticks and we ate egg rolls. I ate the sushi but nobody else ate them because they had seaweed around them. They were goo-ooo-ood!

I had a chinese dress as a costume and my sister wore a chinese dress too. My brother wore a karate outfit. We were the only one's there dressed up. Even the people who did it weren't dressed up.

Next week we'll learn about America.

The Tooth Stories

I've never had a loose tooth in my whole life. They are stuck in there stiff and straight. I hate it! But finally I have one. Not only one. There's another story about another loose tooth. I'll tell you the second loose tooth story first. Ok guys? I'll begin the story.

We were getting ready to go out to the car and go somewhere. I was eating an apple because I didn't have lunch yet. I was munching on my delicious apple and it was mmm, mmm, mmmmmmm. Then I recognized, a tooth hurt! I'll tell you which one it was. You know your two middle teeth? It was one of them, the right one.

So now I have two loose teeth right next to each other. Now I'll tell you the story about my first loose tooth. My Mom was out shopping or something and me and my Dad and my sister were all at the house. I was just walking around trying to find something to do because everybody else already had something to do. A tooth started to hurt so I wiggled it and OH, it was LOOSE! AHHHHH! I thought I was going to still have my baby teeth when I was a Grandma.

Smart Habit Saturday

What I said on my other post was that I would actually try to do this habit and I am trying. I'm trying to keep my room clean. That is my habit. It's kind of fun. Some days I can't actually do it because I'm busy. I hate being too busy because I always want to clean my room.

Just kidding! I'm fibbing again. You know little girls like to fib. I love missing out on cleaning my room. I hate cleaning even though I'm good at it. I hate cleaning because I already have to clean half of the house every day. I hate that. Hate it, hate it, hate it, because me and my sister and brother make so many messes. It's not my fault I make messes. I'm just a kid and I'm learning how to not make messes.

I'm going to keep working on my room this week.

Learning To Type

Dear Grandma and Grandpa Robbins,

I miss you. I can’t wait until this summer because you will be coming home. I hope you’ve had a good mission. I don’t actually know if I want to go on a mission or not. I don’t know if I want to leave family because I love them a lot.

Today I learned how to type. I only have to look at the keyboard for just one minute and then I do the rest without looking at the keyboard. It’s fun to type. Now that I can type I can type you letters whenever I want to.

Tomorrow I’m turning seven. Tomorrow is my brother’s basketball game too. I wish you could be here for all of it. It’s going to be a nice day. Me and my dad and my brother are going to play out in the snow. I don’t actually know if we are but I’m going to try!

Last night I wrote a blog. You should go look at it. It’s really funny. It’s about making habits and me earning $100.

Me and Love played horsy together tonight. I drug her around the house on a little pony. We had lots of fun together until finally she didn’t want to play with me anymore and she got into my brother’s toothpaste. She got it on the bottle, on the sink, in her hair and on my pink pony. My brother didn’t want to clean it up but my mom made him. It was funny and I didn’t feel bad for him at all. While he was cleaning it up I was writing all about it!

Love Kathleen Gallagher

SMART Habit Saturday

I want to be part of my Mom’s Lazy Organizer’s challenge. My new habit is going to be keeping my room clean. Doing it night, day and afternoon. I’m going to do it because I have a bunch of hooks now that I can hang jackets, belts, my towel, pajamas and robe on.

I’m going to make my bed and put my dirty clothes in the clothes basket because I never actually do. I just throw them on the floor. I made a special spot for my books in my room so that my one year old sister can’t get them. They are in a bag that rolls. Then I hung that bag on a hook up high. There is a place in the bag for my flashlight so I can read in the dark when my sister is sleeping. Whenever I want more books I just roll it to the library and pick some new books out.

I don’t know if I’m actually going to do it or not but I’m actually going to try because it is pretty hard to keep my junky room clean. My Mom always has to make me clean it every day. That’s why I want to have a habit of doing it so it will be easier and I’ll do it forever. And then I’ll get $100 from my Mom because she’s going to give me $1 every time I clean my room. After I’m done, when I’m grown up my room will be shiny and clean and I’ll have $100. Ha ha ha, that’s so funny! Who would think such a little girl would get $100???

The funniest part about it is I’m a fibber because my Mom isn’t actually going to give me money. I just wanted to trick her and see if she would even fall for it!

Kate's Babysitting Chores

Kate doesn’t want to blog today so I’m guest blogging for her.

Kate had her book club today. We didn’t get the book until an hour before it started and I was sure she wouldn’t finish it but she read the whole thing in 30 minutes! Yes, it was a short Magic Treehouse chapter book but she’s only 6 years old you know. I was very impressed!

I wasn’t feeling well today and I needed a nap. Love had already taken an early nap so Kate offered to baby sit for me. She did such a good job playing with the baby and making her happy and that made me happy! She did a puzzle with her and played house and then watched a movie.

Kate joins us:

Today I babysat my sister while my Mom and brother were sleeping. In the middle of the movie she started getting fussy so I asked her if she had a stinky diaper and she said NO! The only reason she was crying was because she was sick or she’s growing a new tooth. Then she started pounding on my Mom’s door so I hurried and got her and brought her back. Then my Mom woke up because she started crying even louder when she fell and bonked her head on the floor. My Mom gave me a dollar for babysitting.

That’s the end of Kate’s lovely true story of babysitting her sister.
